Dunedin to Nugget point- a Day of signs

The view from our balcony at Nugget Point

We left Dunedin quite early, did some food shopping and also took a few photos of the City on the way out as we did not get time the previous day.

The journey was great through rolling hills and little towns where we saw a number of signs which made us laugh.

As you entered one town there was a sign which said

DRIVE SLOWLY… NO DOCTOR... NO HOSPITAL…

BUT ONE GRAVEYARD.

We thought that was quite funny really and in the same town was a sign advertising an Abattoir, the name of the company was

SOUTH KILL ABBATOIR.

Finally on the back of a T-Shirt,

I am not really a trained gynaecologist but I can look if you wish?

That’s enough of signs.
Anyway we were looking forward to visiting and staying at Nugget Point Lodge as we had read a lot about it before we left the
UK and we were not disappointed.

We had tried to change the booking for two nights but they were full and you can understand why. We had a first floor bedroom with amazing views over the bay and with the sound of waves which sent us off to sleep. However after dinner we drove along the un metalled road to where the Yellow Eyed Penguin spends each evening after a hard days fishing.

They are an endangered bird but this small colony of about 11 birds is just about surviving. I took some photos from the hide but my lens can not really do them justice. After that we walked to the Lighthouse and looked down on the Seals spread-eagled on the rocks below catching the last of the sun. It’s really great to see animals in the correct environment.
Then back to the Lodge we went to do some reading and then off to bed with the sound of the waves in the background. This is a highly recommended place if anybody wants to come.
