The journey was, at first, quite good and then it started to rain and oh boy did it rain from 1000 in the morning right though until about 3 in the afternoon The roads from Cambridge were quite good until we got within 20 kilometres of Auckland and then we hit the Auckland traffic, our first traffic jam since we arrived in New Zealand, quite an experience really. We crept through the suburbs of Auckland on the Expressway and over the top of Auckland and across the bridge to the next part of our journey. We stopped at a service centre for a coffee, and sitting there watching the rain and mostly European type cars we could have been on the M40. The views en-route were totally restricted due to weather which is a shame and we hope it will improve for our drive back to Auckland later in the week.
The rain continued and the first part of the journey beyond Auckland was very twisty and with limited overtaking opportunities and by 1 pm we were getting a little peckish. Then out of the rain and mist appeared this sign which said ‘Burger King’ and so we cheated and went inside and had one of their burger meals. Just what the Doctor ordered on this wet day.
We arrived at the ferry pier and crossed over in 10 minutes to the headland and drove round the coast to Russell to our accommodation for the night called ‘Russell Cottages’
This is a super place and we have our own little cottage, see photos on Phanfare. We took a walk around town, not much of it really, and then headed back for dinner and watched Sky Movies for a while only we were watching a film that neither of us could follow so we gave up and went to bed. And this is really a proper comfortable bed to be in.
Tomorrow we head north to meet Brian & Sheila, should be great.
